St Mary’s Church on Church Lane Nether Alderley is a beautiful sandstone building, parts of which date from the 14th Century. The Church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.
Some two years ago, the church applied for a temporary faculty to remove a small group of pews at the rear of the church, to provide a servery for coffee and refreshments after the church service. Whilst previously the Parish Hall was used, few congregants stayed for coffee and following visits to several local churches, we were advised that providing refreshments in the Church, often meant congregants socialising afterwards and growth of the congregation.
Following an 18-month trial, we now often have many congregants staying for coffee, which has provided a real lifeline for the older members of the Church. On special occasions, such as Easter, we have also provided snacks, the servery becoming a focal point, where faith and friendship has helped us to grow those attending on a weekly basis.
We now see to move from a couple of tables, to a more formal “set up”, with an “L” shaped servery:
- We plan to use high quality kitchen base units to form the kitchenette. The length of the servery being circa 2.3 metres by 1.5 metres. The base units will afford sufficient storage for all needs, no longer requiring the movement of cups etc from the rear of the Church.
- The frontage of the servery would be fitted with oak taken from some old pews which have been stored, this will ensure they blend in with existing pews.
- The work tops will be a dark finish, again to ensure they blend with the pews within the Church.
