Easter Appeal on behalf of Oasis

Hello dear friends at St Mary’s Church, here I am again writing on behalf of Oasis, the community centre/Charity in Gorton, Manchester, that you have kindly supported so generously in the past,

Easter is coming, a time of love and giving, so please can I ask you to give again?

There is a lot of hunger out there.  Cold weather makes it worse and although Oasis is open 5 days a week providing hot drinks, breakfast and a cooked lunch, what about the weekends?  I volunteer on a Monday, and when the doors open at 9.30 am I watch the people streaming in – I often wonder when they last ate.  I’ve been shocked to find out that many people don’t have stoves or ovens, hence ready food, like instant porridge, pot noodles etc, are the staple diet of many.  How awful!  But food is food and people will have their favourites.

At Oasis people from 35 different countries are supported, through education, work experience, visits and outings, help with crisis support and much, much more.  Last year Oasis won an award from the Centre for Social Justice for being such an effective “grassroots charity”.   It’s on our doorstep.  Please feel free to visit at any time or let me know if you would like to visit with me.

In the past we have given Easter eggs – and they are welcome – but honestly I believe its the basic, staple diet things like cereals, tins and packaged goods that are most needed.

Thank you in anticipation,

Lesley Marsh
