Funerals and memorial services: Mourning the loss.Celebrating life
There’s that poem, isn’t there, by W H Auden, ’stop all the clocks’. You might know it from ‘Four weddings and a Funeral’. Amongst other things, it talks about not mourning the person who has gone, because they are simply in the other room. As lovely a poem it may be, but this is not true. A funeral is a time to mark the passing of a loved one who has died. This is am important part of the grieving process and a funeral, done well, can enable our nearest and dearest to mourn and carry on with life, as hard as that may be. A funeral or memorial service can also be a time for remembering the joy and laughter which our loved one brought to the world, a time for celebration and giving thanks. At St Mary’s, we offer not only a beautiful building for your goodbye, but pastoral help and guidance should you want this. We remember your loved one each year at the feast of All Souls, and you’ll be invited to come to the service and light a candle; no pressure, but the offer is there. Caring for people is at the heat of wha we do here on Church Lane. Please do not hesitate to be in touch should you need help with a service of memorial in a form of your own choosing.
